Digital Dentistry: Intraoral Scanning, Software, 3D Printing, and Milling

Are you feeling overwhelmed by 3D printing? Are you hesitant to fully embrace the digital world? Have you been discouraged by the high costs associated with implementing 3D printing in your dental practice or lab?

Our exciting course has everything you, your assistants, and your laboratory need to know about 3D printing. We cover the fundamentals, from intraoral and optical scanning techniques to free software for editing dental models, 3D printing techniques, and methods for fabricating surgical guides. We teach using affordable desktop 3D printers, and the cost per dental model is only around $1-2, while surgical guides cost $4-5 each. We also show you how to use affordable laboratory printing and milling equipment to create occlusal guards and crowns!

In addition, you’ll receive up to 46 continuing education credits provided by AGD PACE. Upon completion, you’ll earn video-based learning credits and independent study CE credits for your dental boards and AGD credits.

Our course is 90% video-based education and 10% projection slides. We use simulated “LIVE” video techniques to demonstrate the use of scanners, printers, software, and surgical guide fabrication. You’ll receive DICOM and STL files of demonstrated cases to follow along, and we provide cheat-sheet handouts to simplify digital techniques for you and your assistants.

To provide the best education possible, our course is broken down into five sections:

Section I: Fundamentals of 3D Dentistry & Intraoral Optical Scanning Learn the basics of digital dentistry, incorporating affordable intraoral scanning techniques, and a review of multiple scanners available on the market.

Section II: Using 3D Printers and Free/Open-Source Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Software Focus on using intraoral scans, exporting STL files, working with files, modeling, and basic smoothing techniques. You’ll also learn how to set up Formlabs, Sprintray, and Nextdent desktop 3D printers and successfully print basic models.

Section III: 3D Printing and Free/Open-Source Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Techniques for Restorative Dentistry Explore using free software downloaded from the internet to help with basic to advanced restorative dentistry topics, such as creating clear aligners, bleaching trays, temporary retainers, and digital wax-up techniques.

Section IV: Surgical Guide Fabrication Learn how to fabricate surgical guides using low-cost desktop 3D printers and milling equipment.

Section V: Advanced 3D Printing Techniques and Troubleshooting Discover advanced 3D printing techniques, such as printing multiple models and setting up custom printing parameters. You’ll also learn how to troubleshoot common issues that may arise during the 3D printing process.
